Herbed Popcorn with Garlic and Parmesan Cheese
I could munch and crunch with the rest of the theater and we were all the same… in the dark.
the movies are a big deal
Going to the movies. It’s kind of a big deal to me. I’ve enjoyed every aspect of going to the movies for as long as I can remember. From calling into the movie phone hotline to hear my choices (remember that voice?), to buying the tickets, to picking our seats, and even the previews. I will consider not even going to the movies today if I know we’re going to miss the previews. It’s like that. The one thing that I didn’t get to do very much as a child was stand in the concession line to buy really expensive popcorn and candy. My parents popped our popcorn at home, distributed them into our individual brown paper bags, and stuffed them into my moms purse. Yeah…we were THAT family. I used to be jealous of all the people standing in line. The butter smelled SO GOOD! At least, what I thought was real butter. It taunted me. Everyone in line laughing and looking like they were having a great time waiting for their fake popcorn. Now I know that it’s nothing but crap that they pour over the popcorn. But at the time when you’re a kid, you just don’t know. Not only was I jealous but I was a bit embarrassed to tell you the truth. My mom reaching into her bag and passing the buttery bags down the row. The brown bags soaking up the real butter just didn’t look as good. I would hope that she would wait until previews. At least that way the theater was dark! I could munch and crunch with the rest of the theater and we were all the same… in the dark.
Looking back, that was probably some of the best popcorn I’ve ever had in my life! Back before GMO’s and God knows what else is in our corn today. My dad would keep it simple. Some hot oil in a heavy pot and the kernels. It always smelled much better than the theater popcorn and my brother and I ate up every bit down to the half popped kernels and even the burnt ones. It was the best.
Today, I pretty much stick to the same thing with my kids except we do more movie nights at home now. It’s cheaper, cozier, and Netflix is a savior for families on a budget! I jazz it up with different flavors every once and while. The boys love my pizza popcorn! It’s messy but so delish! Here’s one they love as well. Try it and I’m sure you and your family will be licking your fingers…right down to the burnt kernels as well. xo
Happy Movie Night!
2 teaspoon dried oregano
2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh thyme
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup grated parmesan Cheese
1 tablespoons kosher salt
8 cups just-popped popcorn (from ½ cup kernels)
4 tablespoons butter
In a small saucepan on low, heat the butter, oregano, fresh thyme, and garlic powder until butter is melted. Allow time for the herbs to infuse the butter, about 2-3 mins. Drizzle half of the popcorn with the herbed melted butter, half of the salt, and half of the parmesan cheese. Repeat with the remaining popcorn and serve immediately. Enjoy! xo
